The CSOHD (Civil Service Occupational Health Department) provides advice on work related health issues to HR sections, line management, health & safety officers and employee assistance officers. Medical and nursing staff have a good working knowledge of health & safety legislation, disability legislation and employment law in relation to occupational health.
Advice on biological, chemical and environmental health hazards in the workplace is often sought. Examples include TB, chickenpox and asbestos. Follow-on interventions can be implemented at short notice, with HSE Public Health liaison if necessary. Most queries are dealt with straight away and the remainder within 48 hours. In some cases, the CSOHD will issue an appointment to review an employee on foot of a referral from HR sections.
